Well, the beta channels are nicer in terms of being able to fit more displays onto the channel, but it's just a pain in the ass to navigate through is my only thing with them.

well. you know, beta channels are like macs. supposedly they have more technical advantages but in reality they are a pain in the ass to use and they are just an inferior product. now if someone likes macs than thats their problem, er, i mean decision. but this is like if the government decided to force everyone in the world to use mac computers from now on. would that be fair? fuck no. frankly, the stooges in charge of youtube seem to be under the delusion that by adding more javascript to a channel page, that makes it better. well let me tell you something youtube, you dumb mother fuckers. It does not make it better. all it does is make your channel a pain in the ass to navigate through and it can even cause things to run slower. was anyone complaining about the original channels? NO!! they werent. there was nothing wrong with the old channels. they had all the features we could want. there was no fucking reason to change it. do I want to have to scroll through my favorites, or uploads while only being able to look at 7 of them at a time? no!! do I need to look at videos directly on my channel, where they run slower and where I cant comment? NO! Do I want the action of going through my playlists to be a fucking 20 minute ordeal? NO! you know what i do want? I WANT MY FUCKING CHANNEL BACK!!!!

I used to hate the beta channels, too. But then YouTube fixed a few things about them like adding full transparency to the wrapper and boxes that opened up new design possibilities. Not to mention the best feature about the beta channel regarding design is that you can save different designs and uploaded backgrounds and switch between them very easily.
From a user interface pov the channel's greatest drawback is that it's new. People can't navigate it as well as the old one because they're not as familiar with it. I've been using the beta channel to watch a lot of Paul's and OTG's videos lately so it's not that difficult to use for me. In the case of OTG the beta channel has a new found benefit. He's got over 2000 videos and has stopped putting his playthroughs in playlists. Which made it difficult to watch them. With the beta channel I don't have to click on page after page of his videos, I can just scroll down and click on them and all without the page reloading I can watch the video I was looking for and then the next one and the one after that too.
Finally the most important part is that YouTube is a corporation. They can do whatever they want. They don't need you to like the beta channel and they don't need bring back the old design no matter how much the old users want it. The noobs out number the users who demand quality and the noobs will use what they're told to use. That's why IE users drastically out number Firefox users. You can be in the minority and complain about it to YouTube and they'll continue to not give a shit or you can learn to accept it now and save yourself some time.

YouTube spends hundreds of millions of dollars on bandwidth every year. It's estimated that YouTube will make $240 million in revenue this year, but they will have to spend $710 million in costs to stay operational. $360 million of that is from bandwidth alone. If the new channels save bandwidth then they save millions of dollars. Not to mention many internet users in the world still use 56k connections and it's important to accommodate those users if you're the fourth most trafficked site on the web and your main source of revenue comes from advertising because you're a free service. YouTube isn't a bad corporation because "they don't give a shit about their users" they're a bad corporation because they don't make a profit. If they really wanted to cut down on bandwidth and sever space they could crack down on all the copyrighted material that people upload and delete it all or cut the video length time to 5 minutes and get rid of HQ and HD videos. Instead they decided to just redesign a few pages to make them more efficient. So considering they could have done a lot worse than a simple redesign, which every website has done since the beginning of the internet, they sound like they do care about their users. And that is my two cents on the beta channels. |

I hear ya! YouTube even muted some of my tutorial videos because of copywriter reasons. But I handed in my protest and they reactivated them. ;D If they wouldn't of done that, then I just would of uploaded my videos on a other video hoster. It's that simple. The bandwidth issue doesn't really bother me. I'm sure they already make enough money as it is. Fact is, the users made YouTube big and not the concern. So if they say "fuck you" to the users, I will say "fuck you" to YouTube.  Sry if this sounds kind of harsh but I am drunk ;D Tomorrow I'll probably regret this. ^^ |
