this is just a little rant of mine. dont take it to heart. if you agree or disagree tell me, but be mature i dont hate final fantasy VII. i played through it and it is a fine game especially for the time but some people feel differently. hundreds of thousands of people consider it to be the best RPG of all time and personally, i dont understand why. I have had alot more fun with other RPGs even around the time FF7 was released. right off the top of my head i can say "legend of dragoon" was an all-around better game. I found the game mechanics to be better, the graphic art to be better and the storyline to be better. these 2 games came out around the same time period and "legend of dragoon" just seemed to destroy FFVII in every way, and yet you dont see many people saying that legend of dragoon is the best RPG ever (though most people who actually play it do). i personally didnt find final fantasy 7 to be all its cracked up to be. many parts bored me and i wasnt crazy about the battle system or overall storyline. dont think that i hated it but here are some RPGs that i have enjoyed a million times more final fantasy X (how many people besides me think its the best FF game?) persona (any of them) legend of dragoon (already mentioned) now im sure i will get flamed up the ass for saying or even thinking anything bad about final fantasy VII and i know that there are alot of immature, easily offendable people on the internet. If you wish to express your opinions do so in a concise mature manner. the karma meter isnt there to thumb down every comment you dont agree with. now if theres anyone who agrees with me about this and has an RPG that they think is underrated, share that too.

Wait a sec.. smite is thumb down..? D: DAMNIT! xD I always press the right one.. without reading tho.. meh..<.< just gave you -11.... (only time tho..) gonna fix it in da next hour.. well, you are right. Most of the time FFVII was boring to me, the beginning sucks, it takes WAY too much time to get into the story, the characters are ... weird .. I mean.. c'mon , you know what I mean. Tbh, the best RPG ever ..(my opinion) was Terranigma for the SNES. underrated game! I loved playing it as a kid, even tho alot of boss fights are weird or hard or... dunno weird. xD I'm getting persona 4 next week. I'm excited about it, 'cause I heard paul talking about it alot.. and.. well.. it seems to be a good game. anyway.. back to ffvii.... until the very end, there was ONE time I felt like.. " WOAH" but.. that's only when Rufus died by the Weapon thingie. <.< >.> I should stop typing... too much text, not enuff content.

Lucky I use a translator. It tells me smite is something like hitting or torturing. That doesn't sound like 'thumbs up' to me ;D Anyway, I never was a big fan of the FF series. I had FF adventues for the gameboy and for the PC FFVII cause I heard it was so good. Well, I never even finished the game xD. But I completed Grandia II two or three times. It has very much similarities with FFVII only difference was that I liked it better. Idk why, I just never really got into FFVII I guess. Gametrailers.com has a nice Retrospective video about FFVII and it points out a few things what made the game so popular imo. Final Fantasy Retrospective

I suppose there's quite a few things that made it popular. Maybe partly because FF was such a popular series already, and then FF7 was the first one 3D one, so people were like "OMG OMG My eyes are orgasming!" because the graphics were at least good at the time.
And when it comes to story, I never truely understood what's so amazing about it, so I assume I must be missing something. But that's nothing new, stories often lose me over the course of the long RPG, but from closer attention to the story (aka, a playthrough by somebody who explained it quite well and stuff), I think it's a great story. Sure, in the end it's just another crazy evil guy trying to destroy the world, but there's other stuff in the story that happens, and things that led up to the guy turning evil and crazy, and stuff. So it's like, there's a simple story for people who just want to play the game, but for people who want to look more deeply into it, there's a lot more behind it.
Anywayz, I do agree that the game is overrated, but to each their own. If half the worldreally loves the game that much, that's good for them, as long as it doesn't make them fail to see other great RPGs, such as... Star Ocean, Tales Of series, Legend of Legaia, Breath of Fire, and mooore. Also, my favourite RPG of all time is FF8, for some reason I love the setting and the feel of it all, and Squall has a sexy jacket! I also kinda get some strangely high enjoyment from playing a character in school, going to classes and talking to schoolmates, doing exams and such. I dislike school, but I like school in games. I'm weeiird.
I haven't typed so much at once in a long time. That's just how much I loves talking about Final Fantasy I suppose.

paul, i would highly recommend that you play legend of dragoon. here are some good reasons. 1) its is very intricate. the game starts out pretty simple at the beginning. you are basically trying to rescue some chick but you save her in the first couple hours you are playing the game. you will be surprised by how much the storyline and overall scale of the game changes as you progress. the game really builds and builds and by the time you are at the end of the first disk, the scale of things have drastically escalated. the game gets better and better with each disk. 2) the battle system is awesome. you have these things called "additions." they are basically combos that you execute by pressing the "x" button at the right time. here is a link to see what it looks like www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsJomYdCA1Q3) also the graphics are amazing. check out this cutscene. keep in mind this is on the ps1 (watch in high quality) www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH1rT4Up22M4) the storyline is awesome especially by the third disk. dont read anything about it on the internet becuase people are notorious about posting spoilers. 5) the music. youll see that as soon as you turn the game on. also, i know how much you like dragons. the dragons in legend of dragoon are like none you have ever seen. here are a few of them

I agree, those dragons do look ew, from what I can see anyway. Reminds me of Breath of Fire 4, where most of the dragons didn't look like dragons at all, especially the one in the desert at the beginning.
Anywayz, I've wanted to play Legend of Dragoon for a long time, simply because it's an old RPG by Squaresoft, made aruond the time of FF7-9. Only trouble is, as far as I know, it was never released in Europe, so I can't get it unless I have a Playstation that can play NTSC games.

NTSC games. actually it was made directly by sony. square had nothing to do with this. thats one of the reasons i like it so much. its nice to have a high-quality RPG outside of squaresoft's library.

It is? I always thought it was a Square game, or that they at least had something to do with it. That was why I'd always wanted to play it. Oh well, at least it's popular, that's enough to make me want to anyway.

" and i know that there are alot of immature, easily offendable people on the internet."
And here we have a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Also Legend of Dragoon sucked shitdick and is carried entirely by nostalgia. It tried too hard to be a FF7 wannabe and failed miserably, with a shit battle system that has been done far better in other games in the very same year it came out (Paper Mario, for example) Maybe you should practice what you preach and remove your own fanboy goggles.
